The Smithsonian is a federally chartered entity governed by a hybrid structure of public trusteeship and independent governance. Its mission:  "the increase and diffusion of knowledge among [people]." Regarding the NMAAHC (National Museum of African American History and Culture), its mandate is to collect, preserve, research, and exhibit African American life, history, and culture in all of its depth and complexity—from slavery and Reconstruction to cultural innovation and civil rights. Executive Order 14253 is titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" and it represents an unprecedented effort to rewrite American history by exerting federal influence over the content, staffing, and funding of the Smithsonian—especially targeting the NMAAHC.
