About Us

America’s History: SOS (Save Our Smithsonian) was launched by a concerned group of Black lawyers to oppose President Trump's Executive Order targeting the Smithsonian and its National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). We are now strengthened by the participation of students, historians, educators, and community leaders who understand that the Smithsonian Institution and the NMAAHC embody a sacred public trust—one that binds all Americans in a shared responsibility to protect, preserve, and honor the truth of our collective history.

People around the world recognize ‘SOS’ as a signal of distress and a need for intervention. In our case, it is also an acronym for Save Our Smithsonian—from efforts that endanger our democracy and the integrity of our shared history. We invite all who value truth and justice to sign our petition at change.org/SaveBlackHistory. Our petition is the first step in a broader campaign to awaken the public to our shared responsibility to defend the NMAAHC and the Smithsonian.  These institutions are entrusted to honor and safeguard America’s History for future generations.
